De Staal – Delft.
The historic city center of Delft is known for life on and around the canals. The boats, terraces, bridges and canal houses. This characteristic feeling is reflected in De Staal. This iconic residential tower is the center of a special neighborhood that is being built on the east side of Delft by real estate developer NovaForm.
3 parts, each with its own character
Located along the A13, De Staal will be visible as the new entrance to Delft. The striking residential-work tower with apartments and business spaces was designed by du Croq & van Zutphen architects. The residential tower is divided into 3 parts, for which a collaboration has been entered into with three other architectural firms. Under the supervision of duCroq & van Zutphen, Architectuurstudio AAAN, Studio RAP and CUBE architects each design a part of the residential tower.
Cube Architecten made the architectural design for the middle part of De Staal. In this block, design is combined with the integration of Solarix solar panels, so that the facades of this block will generate energy for the residents in the tower. In the facade design, inspired by a Delft blue vase, Solar Design panels are integrated in the bent facade panels.
Cube Architecten creates a dynamic and refined image by playing with slight angles of inclination, horizontality and verticality, creating a beautiful wickerwork of facade panels. This design not only ensures its own identity and a varying experience of the facade at different scale levels and times of the day, but, in combination with the color scheme, also creates cohesion with the other parts of the residential tower.

In collaboration with Solarix, the design has been worked out in standard dimensions with a blue design from the line collection in reference to the Delft color palette. The hand-drawn lines in blue and white color combinations are a direct reference to the craftsmen who made the most beautiful drawings on the Delft pottery.
