Solar facades: The beautiful source of solar energy in a sustainable city

Primary school De Kikker, originally designed by Liesbeth van der Pol of Dok Architects, undergoes a complete metamorphosis in the summer of 2024. The old bright-green plating, which needed to be replaced, is being replaced by colourful, custom solar panels from Solarix. This renovation is an initiative of the Municipality of Amsterdam, which approached Dok Architects and Solarix to develop a new suitable colouring and custom panels.• 15 July 2024

We’re delighted to welcome Paul Vriend to Solarix as our new Account Manager! With a background in architectural engineering and experience in the sales of sustainable materials, Paul brings valuable knowledge to our team. His expertise aligns perfectly with our mission to continue scaling up and working together to create more sustainable and beautiful cities.To get to know Paul a little better, we asked him a few questions about his background, motivations, and what excites him most about joining Solarix.

What appealed to you most about Solarix and our solar façades? “The fact that we can, in collaboration with architects, create façades that provide added value both aesthetically and environmentally. Given the current energy shortage on the grid, we’re able to offer solutions that help relieve pressure on the grid by creating cleverly designed and visually appealing façades.” What will you mainly focus on as an Account Manager in the upcoming period? “I want to invest a lot of time in creating as much awareness of Solarix as possible among architects and developers. I have a large network of architects and believe that specifiers are extremely important for including our products in their plans.” How do you see the role of Solarix in making the built environment more sustainable? “It’s a very important one! By making optimal use of all façades (and not just the ‘fifth façade,’ as the roof is often called), we can take a huge step in making the built environment more sustainable. This way, a great deal of energy can be generated that is directly usable for the building’s occupants.” What makes working at the intersection of design, technology, and sustainability interesting for you? “With a background in architectural engineering and extensive experience both at architecture firms and in the sales of sustainable materials, these three elements come together beautifully in my role at Solarix! Being able to think along with the architect, advise clients on the potential power output per square meter, and bring it all together in a technically feasible mounting system is incredibly fulfilling.” What are you most looking forward to in your work at Solarix? “Collaborating with passionate colleagues, promoting the Solarix philosophy, and jointly realizing even more beautiful projects!” What do you see as the biggest challenge in growing solar design in the Netherlands and beyond? “A major challenge will be convincing the construction sector (in general) to choose a façade system from Solarix. I’ve noticed that the construction industry tends to be somewhat cautious when it comes to adopting new technologies or products. If we can drive change here through the right information, added value, and certifications, then there’s a huge potential!” What gives you energy outside of work? “Spending quality time with my family at home, and also socializing with friends. Besides that, I regularly exercise such as bootcamp and running.” A warm welcome to Paul! Meet Paul Vriend – our new account manager

Summer production at Solarix is in full flow. Over the past few weeks, three shipments totalling more than 1,600 coloured Solarix panels have left our assembly hall in Weesp for St. Moritz. The panels will be used for the extension of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.laudinella.ch/en/">Hotel Laudinella</a>, in collaboration with <a target="_blank" href="https://strickerarchitekten.ch/">Stricker Architekten</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uffer.swiss/">Uffer Holzbau</a> and developer <a target="_blank" href="https://reech.ch/de">Reech</a>.Each panel has been fitted with a custom-designed mounting system. Meanwhile, installation on the façade is already well underway. The result promises to give the Swiss hotel a striking and sustainable new appearance. • 11 August 2025

Project update

Once again, grid congestion is putting significant pressure on many construction projects. As a result, energy solutions are being accelerated. Battery storage and solar façades are two separate answers to this issue – but when combined, they can offer optimal results. Together, they provide a temporary solution until the grid is upgraded, and long-term energy security thereafter. But how exactly? The building envelope – alongside the roof – plays a key role in this. And façades offer unique advantages in the context of grid congestion.<a href="/en">Solarix</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://solarnrg.nl/">SolarNRG</a> explain how. In this article, we share our experience, give practical tips, and explain why solar façades combined with battery storage form an important solution – now and in the future – in the fight against grid congestion.

1. Balanced energy generation, even in winter Facade panels are typically installed on south or southwest-facing walls, where they can generate extra yield — particularly in winter. Because the sun sits lower in the sky during the colder months, facades can produce significant energy at exactly the right time. While roof panels tend to peak in summer, facade panels deliver usable energy in the colder seasons, when demand is often higher. The result: a more balanced generation profile throughout the year.2. Reduced peaks, better daily distribution A solar facade also helps distribute energy generation more evenly throughout the day. Roof panels operate best around midday, when the sun is highest. Facade panels, however, start generating earlier in the morning and continue later into the afternoon and early evening. These are the very times when energy consumption tends to spike — think of businesses powering up equipment or households cooking and charging devices. This better alignment with actual demand helps reduce feed-in at peak times, easing pressure on the grid.3. A complementary energy system One of the major challenges for solar owners is feeding surplus energy back into the grid — especially on sunny days when the grid is overloaded. Facade panels can help ease this pressure. Their complementary generation profile stabilises energy production throughout the day and across the seasons, reducing reliance on the grid and minimising the risk of grid stress.4. Towards energy independence The rise of home and commercial battery systems, combined with smart energy management, makes it increasingly easy to use, buffer, or store self-generated electricity. When paired with facade solar panels, this creates a resilient system that is less dependent on external energy sources and the overloaded grid. This makes it far less vulnerable to grid congestion. This energy can also be shared locally. Especially where consumption profiles are complementary — such as between neighbouring businesses — the solar facade contributes to a more independent, off-grid energy system.The outcome? Lower energy costs, reduced feed-in charges, more consistent access to sustainable power, and greater long-term value for your property.
