Set against the snow-covered backdrop of the Swiss Alps, Hotel Laudinella has recently been extended, with its distinctive architecture carefully further developed. Commissioned by Hotel Laudinella, and in collaboration with developer Reech and architect Sticker Architekten, a future-proof extension has been realised in which sustainability and aesthetics go hand in hand. The integrated Solarix solar facade forms an essential part of this extension. The facade combines high-performance energy generation with a refined, calm appearance that seamlessly aligns with the alpine context and the existing architecture. Through the use of custom-designed solar panels, the facade becomes not only functional but also a defining visual element within the overall design. With its grand opening in December 2025 and the first guests already welcomed, this project marks a new chapter for Hotel Laudinella. At the same time, it represents Solarix’s first realised solar facade in Switzerland, where sustainable energy solutions are increasingly becoming an integral part of high-quality architecture. Client: Hotel Laudinella Architect: Stricker Architekten AG Project team: Reech AG , Uffer Holzbau, Solpic and Solarix.

The project

A total of 1,232.8 m² of Solarix solar facade panels has been integrated into the extension, of which 487.5 m² actively contributes to energy generation. The panels are carefully incorporated into a warm timber façade structure, where sustainability is reflected not only in energy performance but also in material use. The wood was locally sourced from Graubünden, significantly reducing the project’s ecological footprint. In combination with the photovoltaic installations on the roof, the solar facade provides up to approximately 30% of the building’s energy demand, marking an important step towards energy-efficient and future-proof construction. For the facade, a warm, green-tinted custom colour was developed within the Solarix Dot collection. This colour is characterised by subtle nuances and a refined texture, creating a vibrant and rich façade appearance that stands out both up close and from a distance. In this way, aesthetics and performance come together seamlessly within the architectural design.

UNStudio has designed One Helix, one of the most sustainable laboratory buildings in the world, located on the Amsterdam University Medical Centre (Amsterdam UMC) campus. This highly ambitious and innovative design integrates cutting-edge sustainability features while maintaining an elegant and intelligent architectural approach. The building, developed in collaboration with Amsterdam UMC, De Vries en Verburg, UNStudio, SolarNRG, Kenwell, Wijnveen, and Solarix, optimises energy generation on all four sides. Solar panels are seamlessly incorporated on top of the fins and as a façade for the technical space on the roof, ensuring a balanced and efficient energy yield. The 6,515 m² structure combines laboratory and office spaces with supporting functions and amenities. Light grey Solarix panels frame the entire top band of the building, while suede black panels adorn the five wings, providing a distinctive aesthetic visible from the interior on every floor.Designed to become one of the most sustainable laboratory environments in the world Designed as an all-electric, net energy-positive building, One Helix is built to maintain net zero emissions and has achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification. Additionally, the project targets a low embodied carbon footprint, with an MPG score of ≤0.6. The result is a striking architectural landmark where energy generation is seamlessly integrated into the design. Client: De Vries en Verburg Architect: UNStudio Developer: Breakthrough properties Project team: Amsterdam UMC, SolarNRG, Kenwell, Wijnveen, and Solarix.

The integration of solar energy into the facade of One Helix has been carefully designed for both functionality and aesthetics. The light grey Solarix panels from the Mono collection (M-636 Light Granite) frame the upper band of the building, creating a subtle and harmonious appearance. For the fins, black suede panels (B-900) were specifically chosen to ensure optimal energy generation. By strategically applying colour and material, the solar facade enhances both the energy efficiency and the architectural quality of the design.

Solarix is proud of the innovative solar facade that significantly contributes to the climate adaptation of the new dsm-firmenich headquarters in Maastricht. This project, developed by EDGE and 3W real estate, and realized in collaboration with Broekbakema, BAM, and LDS energy, marks a milestone in sustainable construction and serves as a prime example of how buildings can become Paris-proof. The new dsm-firmenich headquarters emerged from the renovation and expansion of the historic Ambachtsschool and Euroscoop Cinema, creating a blend of heritage and modern sustainability.

Expected to generate 36,000 kWh per year | Equal to the absorption of 1152 trees.

Estimated annual CO2 reduction of the solar facade of dsm-firmenich headquarters

The innovative Solarix solar facade, integrated into the new construction section of the building, comprises 521 m² of panels, of which 465 m² are active and 56 m² are dummies. With an expected annual yield of 36,000 kWh and an estimated CO2 reduction of 26,772 kg per year, the facade makes a significant contribution to the sustainability of the headquarters. Solarix closely collaborated with Broekbakema to develop special panels that perfectly match the building’s design. These panels, in a blend of grey tones from the Dot collection, are subtly integrated into the facade, creating a harmonious whole with the concrete and glass elements.

The new dsm-firmenich headquarters is the first national monument in the Netherlands to achieve Paris-proof status, meaning it meets the climate requirements of the Paris Agreement. The building features rooftop solar panels, excellent insulation, efficient HVAC systems, smart lighting, and water-saving measures. This holistic approach minimizes long-term environmental impacts and resulted in the new construction section achieving the highest sustainability certification, BREEAM Outstanding. This certification was partly achieved because the Solarix facade solar panels received a Category 1 classification in the National Environmental Database for this project.
