Protected cityscapes and townscapes represent a rich history and cultural significance. It is essential to preserve these structures while striving for a sustainable future. Solar panels for protected cityscapes, monuments, or heritage can play an important role in this, but the challenge is to integrate them without compromising the aesthetic value of the buildings.Joep Oudendijk, specialist in sustainable energy solutions for heritage and monuments at Solarix, emphasizes that owners should be aware of the lengthy process and permit applications that come with it. &quot;It is a long process,&quot; says Joep, &quot;but with the right approach and materials, such as terracotta solar panels, it is absolutely possible to integrate sustainable energy without compromising the aesthetics of historic buildings.&quot;

Municipal monuments, national monuments, provincial monuments and other heritage are looking for ways to make their buildings more sustainable without losing their historical appearance. Joep Oudendijk emphasizes that the colour and texture of the solar panels must perfectly match the existing roof tiles: &quot;The biggest requirement is colour retention. That is why we are developing terracotta solar panels with a ceramic print with inorganic pigments that do not discolour. These panels integrate seamlessly without detracting from the historical appearance of the building.&quot; The mounting material must also be coloured to ensure a harmonious appearance. Solarix works closely with partners such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.valksolarsystems.com/">Van der Valk Solar</a> to offer coloured mounting material as standard, which is essential for maintaining the aesthetics of protected cityscapes. In addition, Solarix offers samples of the terracotta solar panels, so that owners and housing associations can view and test the panels before making a final decision. It is also possible to order just one panel, instead of large quantities. The terracotta solar panels are in stock and fit every European mounting system and do not detract from conventional panels.Property owners can opt for terracotta solar panels for protected cityscapes, townscapes, monuments, and heritage sites. How do you maintain aesthetics with terracotta solar panels on a protected cityscape or monument?

Joep points out the added value of terracotta solar panels despite a slight decrease in performance compared to conventional solar panels: &quot;What you lose in efficiency is more than compensated for by the aesthetic value that is retained. No panels means no savings. We pave the way to install solar panels in an aesthetic way without detracting from a beautiful home or building and to reduce energy costs.&quot;The terracotta solar panels from Solarix, with a capacity of 355 Watt peak per panel, offer an excellent balance between aesthetics and efficiency. They are designed to integrate perfectly with existing roof tiles and retain their colour and durability, comparable to our facade panels that last 30-40 years. &quot;If you want to make your home more sustainable, you are stuck with colour, and that colour must match the colours of the roof as closely as possible and therefore often terracotta,&quot; says Joep.

Aesthetic and high efficiency

No two protected cityscapes or townscapes are the same, meaning that each location has its own specific requirements and challenges. A prime example of how terracotta solar panels have been successfully applied to a protected cityscape can be found in Arnhem. Here, our terracotta solar panels were integrated onto a historic building, while preserving both its sustainable and aesthetic values. By working closely with local heritage committees and using coloured mounting materials, we were able to seamlessly integrate the solar panels into the existing roof tiles. According to Joep: &quot;In projects like the one in Arnhem, we even had the entire bottom rail coloured to ensure a harmonious appearance.&quot; The Arnhem project also shows the broader impact that sustainable initiatives can have. As highlighted in an article by <a target="_blank" href="https://platforme.nl/hoe-een-klein-project-3x-impact-kan-maken-solarix-en-social-energy-willen-meer-brengen-voor-de-samenleving/">PlatformE</a>, this project not only contributed to the sustainability of a historic building, but also had a positive social and ecological impact. Solarix worked with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.socialenergy.me/">Social Energy</a> to combine sustainable energy solutions with social initiatives. This project in Arnhem demonstrates how local engagement and community collaboration can lead to greater societal benefits, and serves as an inspiring example of how sustainable technology and social responsibility can go hand in hand to create broader impact.

Installing terracotta solar panels on buildings in protected cityscapes and townscapes requires a permit application. “Owners really need to take into account the permit process and the potentially long lead time. The rules and permit requirements vary per municipality and aesthetic committee, so it is essential to be well-informed and start preparing in time,&quot; Joep emphasizes.The permit process can vary from four to six months and includes several phases, including a waiting period for assessment and publication, during which people can object. More and more municipalities also have specific requirements for new construction, such as the ban on black solar panels on terracotta roofs. This emphasizes the importance of colour retention and aesthetic integration when choosing solar panels. Here is a practical guide to prepare well for the permit process:1. Preparation:<ul><li>Gather information about the building: Note the historical status and protection category of the intended building. This can vary from municipal monument to national monument and protected townscape or village view.</li><li>Research local regulations: Check the conditions for solar panels on buildings in protected townscapes and village views. Some municipalities have specific requirements for the placement and visibility of solar panels.</li></ul>2. Consultation:<ul><li>Contact your local heritage committee: Understand the requirements and restrictions that apply to your specific location. The heritage committee can advise on the aesthetic and technical requirements.</li><li>Consult a certified installer: Choose an installer with experience in protected cityscapes and monuments. They can help you prepare an application and ensure that the installation complies with regulations.</li></ul>3. Documentation:<ul><li>Prepare detailed plans: These should describe the location and aesthetic integration of the terracotta solar panels. Ensure that the plans clearly show how the panels will integrate with the existing roof structure.</li><li>Include visual aids: Use photographs and simulations to illustrate how the solar panels will look after installation. This will help to provide a visual representation to the assessing authority.</li></ul>4. Primary school De Kikker, originally designed by Liesbeth van der Pol of Dok Architects, undergoes a complete metamorphosis in the summer of 2024. The old bright-green plating, which needed to be replaced, is being replaced by colourful, custom solar panels from Solarix. This renovation is an initiative of the Municipality of Amsterdam, which approached Dok Architects and Solarix to develop a new suitable colouring and custom panels.

Press release –Unique step in the energy transition - A remarkable and beautifully designed decoration will appear on the facade of the Van Happen Containers head office at the GDC Acht Goods Distribution Center. GDC Acht, like many industrial estates, is a collection of logistics halls with the same appearance. In addition, the image quality plan stipulates that the color of the buildings must be RAL 9007 gray.To liven this up and promote <a href="https://www.vanhappencontainers.nl/">Van Happen</a>&#039;s core values, Solarix developed an eye-catching facade with coloured solar panels and circular mounting system, using the designs of their Dot collection as a starting point. The idea has been developed into a 163 m2 solar facade, where arrows made of solar panels visualize the collection and sorting of waste at Van Happen.What is unique about this design is that, in addition to the coloured glass-glass solar panels, the very first lightweight, circular solar panels with colour have also been developed for this purpose. Solarix has joined forces with the company <a href="https://solarge.com/">Solarge</a> to develop these panels. This manufacturer&#039;s mission is to make the panels lightweight so that they can be used on many more square meters than conventional panels. The unique collaboration between the two Dutch companies will be the prelude to a transition of the built environment and the application of the facade as an energy generator.

Solar design contributes to a more lively street scene, especially on business premises. The corrugated sheet cladding at Van Happen&#039;s building presented a challenge for mounting solar panels. For this project, Solarix, together with the installation company <a href="https://www.kuijpers.nl/">Kuijpers</a>, researched the possibilities and put together a suitable mounting system. The knowledge acquired creates many opportunities for similar buildings on industrial estates that have to tackle a sustainability challenge. With these arguments, an environmental permit was obtained and, partly with the support of <a href="https://www.brabantgeeftenergie.nl/">Brabant geeft Energie</a> from the Province of North Brabant, the first lightweight copies were coloured. With the interest and help of the subsidy provider, Van Happen Containers was able to embellish its facade and contribute to fossil-free energy generation. The design therefore symbolizes the sorting and separation of the mixed waste flow that enters and the smaller raw material flows that leave the site on the way to circular use.Speaking of circular, Solarix-Solarge solar panels already have a much lower CO2 footprint, are manufactured with at least 40% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable thanks to the unique layer principle. In this way, not only the design but also reality will match the activities required for the circular economy. And that is what we are working on together.

Integrating solar facades on industrial estates

BIPVT as a rapid sustainability technology

Solarix secures a €900,000 investment boost from ROM InWest and three construction sector investors. This investment enables the North Holland-based company, specializing in high-quality colored solar panels for facades, to ramp up production in response to the rapidly growing demand for aesthetic solar panels.<a href="https://rominwest.nl/">ROM InWest</a> leads the investment, further solidifying North Holland&#039;s energy transition. The agreement between Solarix and ROM InWest was signed on February 8, 2023. This investment is derived from the Dutch government&#039;s Transition Fund, intended to support companies that accelerate the significant and necessary transitions of our time with their services or products.Solarix&#039;s business model focuses on designing, developing, supplying, and assembling solar panels for sustainable and visually appealing energy-generating facades. The colored solar panels are manufactured in Europe. Founded in 2018 by architect Marloes van Heteren and product designer and artist Reinier Bosch, the company aims to revolutionize both the solar and construction industries. They won the Solar Design Award in 2015 with their prototype of an aesthetic solar panel for facade applications. In 2018, they delivered the first Solar Design facade, and in 2022, Solarix became the first company in Europe to realize a Solar Design facade with colored, lightweight, and circular solar panels.

Facade panels are the answer to this challenge. The clock is ticking... It&#039;s the pivotal moment to take impactful steps towards a climate-neutral built environment. Future office buildings must meet stricter energy requirements. The NZEB-requirements-and-energy-label-c-as-standard requirements have been in place since January 1, 2021, for new office constructions. Additionally, from January 1, 2023, existing office buildings must have at least an Energy Label C.We observe that many properties in the built environment still do not meet energy-efficient standards, failing to meet both NZEB requirements in new construction and the minimum Energy Label C in existing buildings. A recent investigation by <a href="https://nos.nl/artikel/2448908-helft-kantoorgebouwen-voldoet-niet-aan-energiezuinige-norm">NOS</a> highlighted government buildings that won&#039;t meet the minimum Energy Label C. For new construction, a NZEB calculation is required to demonstrate compliance. However, it&#039;s proven challenging to incorporate the right inputs, especially for elements like solar panels.The new energy requirements are significant steps towards accelerating the energy transition. But what should project developers and architects focus on? What considerations are essential in making a NZEB calculation to measure energy performance? When does Energy Label C apply? What can Solarix contribute to meeting these new energy requirements?Stay informed with our blog and start the energy calculation for your project promptly.What&#039;s the difference between NZEB and Energy Label C?Firstly, it&#039;s crucial to distinguish between the NZEB requirements for new construction and Energy Label C for existing buildings.NZEB stands for &#039;Nearly Energy Neutral Buildings&#039; and constitutes a <a href="https://www.rvo.nl/onderwerpen/wetten-en-regels-gebouwen/beng/indicatoren">package of requirements</a> aimed at enhancing the energy performance of European buildings. Since January 1, 2021, it has been legally stipulated that all new constructions, including residential and utility buildings, must comply with these NZEB requirements to obtain a permit. Often, this is initially assessed in a preliminary design. While the NZEB requirements are nationally standardized, they can be tightened by municipalities or in tenders.It has been mandatory since January 1, 2016, for office buildings to have an energy label. Energy Label C is an additional measure for existing buildings and will be mandatory for office buildings from January 1, 2023. From then on, office buildings may have &#039;a maximum primary fossil energy use of 225 kWh per m2 per year.&#039;The Dutch Inspectorate for the Environment and Transport (ILT) verifies compliance with these regulations. The inspection already imposes substantial fines for the absence of an energy label during the sale or lease of commercial properties. If an existing office building doesn&#039;t have Energy Label C after the turn of the year, it can no longer be used as an office space!

Indicators of NZEB RequirementsAccording to RVO (Netherlands Enterprise Agency), the NZEB requirements are based on the Trias Energetica principle: firstly, limit the energy demand, then derive energy as much as possible from renewable sources, and finally, efficiently utilize primary fossil energy sources for the remainder.The energy performance under NZEB is determined by three individual criteria:NZEB 1: Maximum energy demand in kWh/m² of usable area per yearThis value emphasizes the importance of the building envelope&#039;s quality. In other words, an office building requires a good thermal envelope to minimize heating or cooling needs. It involves not only roof and floor insulation but also considers the potential of an insulating facade.NZEB 2: Maximum primary fossil energy use in kWh/m² of usable area per yearThis criterion aims to minimize energy consumption within a building, including from systems and installations, by employing energy-efficient solutions and smart energy usage practices.This requirement sets a limit on the maximum amount of primary fossil fuel needed for heating, cooling, hot water, and ventilation of an office building. For utility buildings, lighting, humidification/dehumidification are added. The efficiency and type of systems and installations within a building, along with the use of renewable energy, play a vital role.If a building generates its own energy – for example, through PV panels like solar panels – the primary fossil energy consumption can be reduced by the amount of energy generated.NZEB 3: Renewable energy in % If energy is still required, a certain percentage of it must be generated from renewable sources, such as through solar panels. Different percentage requirements apply to different building types.The key aspect of this requirement is the sum of the share of primary fossil energy consumption plus the share of renewable energy. It&#039;s calculated by dividing the amount of renewable energy by the total energy consumption. However, the renewable energy must be generated within, on, or attached to the building!When translating these indicators into practical measures affecting NZEB requirements, one can consider sustainability solutions such as:<ul><li>Replacing all lighting with LED lighting.</li><li>Swapping conventional boilers for high-efficiency boilers.</li><li>Replacing glass with double glazing.</li><li>Insulating roofs, facades, and floors.</li><li>Installing heat pumps (water/water, air/water, ventilation air/water, and boosters).</li><li>Installing solar water heaters.</li><li>Installing sun protection systems.</li><li>Installing rooftop solar panels.</li><li>Installing facade-integrated solar panels.</li><li>Creating a green roof.</li></ul>

How do office buildings meet the NZEB requirements or Energy Label C?Office buildings are getting taller, and the available square meters of roof space for traditional PV panels are limited to meet the energy demand for stricter regulations such as NZEB requirements and energy labels.To make existing and future office buildings more inspiring and sustainable, design PV panels can be used, even combined with non-active panels made from other materials.Installing PV panels on the facade, also known as facade solar panels, is one of the most appealing sustainability solutions. This enables a new office building to generate renewable energy and thus meet the NZEB 3 criterion.For existing office buildings, the use of these facade solar panels (PV facade) generates energy, reducing the required primary fossil energy per square meter. Building-integrated solar panels can actually catalyze this process as both electrical and thermal energy sources. Consequently, our country&#039;s energy consumption is unnecessarily high due to many of these buildings being outdated and poorly insulated. They fail to meet modern sustainability standards, yet by 2050, over seven million homes and one million other buildings need to be made sustainable. How can we achieve this in a relatively short period?Solar energy as a solutionIn recent years, we&#039;ve seen an increase in the appearance of solar parks. Who would have thought that a joke would lead to a global first in the solar design facade? The office of Kuijpers in Helmond was equipped in 2018 with the world&#039;s first interactive, energy-generating design facade by Solarix.Managing Director Aukje Kuypers shares that she saw the potential for an energy-generating and luminous facade for one of Kuijpers&#039; office buildings in Helmond. This all stemmed from an idea by Solarix founders Marloes van Heteren and Reinier Bosch, where an integrated concept makes it possible to generate energy while simultaneously providing a building with more identity and allure.

The result? The first interactive, energy-generating design facade developed by Solarix in collaboration with Kuijpers, Kameleon Solar, and Sorba, supported by SPARK Campus and the municipality of Helmond.

Where did the interest in the solar design facade originate?Kuypers indicates that they had previously contemplated using facades for energy generation. After all, there are many square meters of wall space available in the built environment. Additionally, sustainable solutions are a standard mindset for the Kuypers family. For them and a few others, Solarix&#039;s solution seemed like a logical idea, but it was not (yet) the industry standard.

Kuypers was particularly enthusiastic about the uniqueness and character of the product. Additionally, she believes that beautifully crafted products tend to endure longer.

How did the idea of LED lighting come about?In essence, the built environment takes away a piece of nature, Kuijpers explains. By incorporating LED lighting in the facade that moves along with the environment, that piece is brought back. &#039;The facade is essentially a layer that moves with us, and the solar cells used to generate energy can be likened to photosynthesis on the leaves of trees.&#039;Additionally, the LED lighting communicates with the surroundings as it&#039;s linked to data from the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute). This allows it, for instance, to change color with the evening sky. An extra feature that can simulate weather changes and thereby interact with the environment.Does a solar design facade actually generate energy?The design facade generates enough energy to provide full lighting for the entire building when everyone is present. Its energy production is equivalent to that of three residential homes. Furthermore, measurements have shown that the solar design facade adds value compared to rooftop solar panels, as a facade can still produce energy even during periods of lower sun in the winter.It was indeed worth the investment! Cheaper options like painting the facade or more expensive solutions like cladding were possible. However, aside from not being sustainable or energy-efficient, there&#039;s a critical difference that urged the decision to invest:

For instance, the facade turns orange when we participate in &#039;Orange the World,&#039; drawing global attention to violence against women, or it aligns with the colours of the rainbow during carnival celebrations. At the heart of Amsterdam, the vacant Hudson&#039;s Bay department store is being transformed into the new headquarters for the online payment platform, Adyen. The matte black solar panels, specially designed by Solarix, are part of the sustainability initiative for this monumental building.Adyen is redeveloping the two newly available Rokin buildings and the historical Vleeshal behind them in collaboration with contractor Van Wijnen, interior design agency Tank, architecture firm Rijnboutt, project organization SGS, real estate manager CBRE, and technical service provider ENGIE.Circular constructionThe sustainable and circular vision of Adyen takes center stage in the redevelopment of this historical property, aligning well with Solarix&#039;s vision to accelerate the energy transition.One of Adyen&#039;s primary objectives is to maximize the use of existing materials. According to site director Wesly Verhaert, <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.adyen.com/">Adyen</a> is aiming for a &quot;BREEAM certification ranging from Very Good to Excellent, a quality label for minimal environmental impact during both the construction and operational phases.&quot;In addition to reusing materials, Adyen sought to generate energy with one of the three new office buildings. These had to correspond with the existing framework&#039;s dimensions. Last year, Solarix was honored to receive the PROVADA Proptech Award from Daan van der Vorm. Fast forward a year, our first collaboration is now a reality with the integration of design facade solar panels in the modular housing solution: <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://buurtboost.nl/">De BuurtBoost</a> Optopper.This plug-and-play solution for affordable sustainable housing on existing real estate is part of BuurtBoost. In February 2022, BuurtBoost teamed up with <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.burtonhamfelt.nl/">BurtonHamfelt Urban Architecture</a>, <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.datbouwsystemen.nl/">DAT Bouwsystemen </a>(VORM&#039;s timber factory, part of VORM&#039;s Smart2Prefab initiative), <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.theurbanjungleproject.com/">The Urban Jungle Project</a>, and Solarix.In just three months, they developed a complete prototype suitable for topping existing real estate. The result is &#039;the Optopper,&#039; now open for viewing at Sluishuis in IJburg, Amsterdam.What is the BuurtBoost Optopper?Building developer <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://vorm.nl/">VORM</a>, through the BuurtBoost initiative, launched a modular housing solution: the Optopper. It&#039;s a prefabricated, fully-fledged residential apartment made entirely from sustainably produced wood, equipped with a prefabricated bathroom and toilet. The Optopper aims to swiftly provide more affordable homes, applicable to nearly every (post-war) apartment building. It&#039;s designed as a flexible housing product for large-scale application, targeting various demographics, following a standardized methodology.

Sustainable and Nature-Inclusive with Solar DesignThe Optopper is prefabricated using sustainably sourced wood by DAT Bouwsystemen, VORM&#039;s wood factory. These modular homes come with a prefab bathroom and toilet by Smart2Prefab, another VORM initiative, and are adorned with a solar panel facade by Solarix. The Urban Jungle Project adds a green rooftop garden to the Optopper, creating space for birds, bees, caterpillars, and other insects.

Solar Design Facade Panels in the OptopperSolarix Solar Design panels are incorporated into the facade of the Optopper. Depending on the type of dwelling, between 14 m2 and 26 m2 of active facade solar panels are installed. Each home is finished with matching custom dummy corner panels. The houses have an average production of 1800 kWh, meeting the consumption of a standard terraced house. As a result, the energy label of the residence is an impressive A++++, the most efficient and green rating.With the energy generated, a resident can save between €1080 - €1900 per year (calculated at the current energy price of €0.60) on the energy bill. By generating energy in the facade, the roof space offers further possibilities for sustainability, such as a green roof.Solarix Solar Design panels not only contribute to the energy generation of the house but also align with BuurtBoost&#039;s objective of aesthetically upgrading existing neighborhoods. For the Optopper, designs from the <a href="/en/collection">Dot Collection</a> were chosen: a blend of gray tones with depth visible from both near and far. These gray tones complement the architect&#039;s desire for a serene, subdued color that matches the anthracite colors in the exterior of the home.We take pride in the outcome and the wonderful collaboration. High-rise buildings, abundant sunshine, and a willingness to make significant strides in greening construction practices—Dubai presents immense potential for integrated solar energy solutions. We&#039;re incredibly proud to have won the Emaar Innovation Challenge with our aesthetic solar facades!Out of the 209 submissions for the challenge, Solarix was selected among the 14 entities invited to the &#039;demo days&#039; in Dubai. It was a week-long program organized by EMAAR in collaboration with Wouter Truffino Global Proptech, showcasing the latest innovations and providing an opportunity for mutual learning and deeper engagement with Dubai.

What is the Emaar Innovation Challenge?Emaar is one of the largest real estate developers in Dubai, known for, among other things, the tallest building in the world and listed on the Dow Jones. Emaar launched the <a href="https://emaarinnovationchallenge.com/en/emaar/sustainability-challenge/brief">Innovation Challenge</a>. In the Sustainability challenge, the goal was to explore how buildings can be used sustainably towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and which goals are actually achievable. This includes daily energy consumption for the utilities of the building, production and transportation of construction materials, and a waste management system during and after construction.

Solarix pitched for this Sustainability challenge and, alongside Pininfarina, E.ON, WakeCap, OTTAN, Sablona, Vepa – Vertical Parking, Solcold, Zypho, Terrax, Vybe Construction, Recyclex, Basilisk Self-healing Concrete, and Desert Board, was selected for an international adventure in Dubai. It was a wonderful week full of inspiration and new opportunities guided by Wouter Truffino from <a href="https://www.globalproptech.online/">Global Proptech</a>.

Vertical solar panels: a solution to grid congestion According to <a href="https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/elektriciteitsnet-raakt-in-steeds-meer-wijken-overbelast-door-snelle-economische-groei~bd07d87a/?referrer=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F">De Volkskrant</a>, “the demand for electricity is rising so rapidly that the power grid in more and more locations is becoming overloaded. As a result, some new users can no longer be connected.” In 2020, <a href="https://www.technischweekblad.nl/artikelen/tech-achtergrond/congestie-op-het-elektriciteitsnet">Het Technische Weekblad</a> also reported that “the capacity to transport electricity is insufficient in more than 250 areas of the Dutch grid.”Many of the current power cables cannot cope with the increasing demand for electricity. Installing new cables, however, can take up to seven years. Grid operator <a href="https://www.liander.nl/transportschaarste/beschikbaarheid-capaciteit">Liander</a> has even created an <a href="https://www.liander.nl/transportschaarste/beschikbaarheid-capaciteit">online map</a> showing where the network has reached its maximum capacity. This highlights the urgency of the issue. The Impact of Solar Energy on the Grid The growth of solar energy is contributing to the overloading of the grid. With the increasing demand for electricity, more solar panels are being installed on rooftops. However, solar energy production often does not align with consumption. According to the <a href="https://nos.nl/nieuwsuur/artikel/2427174-overbelast-stroomnet-raakt-bedrijven-en-woningbouw">NOS</a>, the Dutch power grid “cannot keep up with the transition to sustainable energy and electrification.” As the demand for electricity grows, more solar power systems are being installed, but the generation of energy and its consumption do not always coincide. This leads to grid congestion, which in turn slows down the energy transition. On sunny days, when demand is relatively low – for example, during holidays or weekends – this can cause peak loads on the grid. Standard flat-roof solar panels, typically installed at a 10-15 degree angle in an east-west configuration, generate peaks in energy production around midday. These peaks can overload the grid, particularly during the summer months. This issue can be alleviated by spreading energy generation beyond these midday peaks. How vertical solar panels ease grid strain According to our Solar Expert, Evert Bende, vertical solar panels installed on east and west-facing facades can reduce the midday peaks. The energy production peaks of vertical solar panels occur in the morning and afternoon, helping to ease the load on the power grid. Benefits of vertical solar panels<ul><li>Improved energy production in winter: Vertical solar panels generate relatively more energy during the winter, when electricity demand is higher. This is ideal for a future where heat pumps, mandatory from 2026, will increase energy needs during the colder months.</li><li>Distributed energy production peaks: The energy production peaks of vertical solar panels occur in the morning and afternoon, easing the load on the grid during the midday peak, when most flat-roof systems generate their highest output.</li><li>More efficient energy consumption: The energy produced by vertical solar panels aligns more closely with the consumption patterns of businesses and offices, leading to higher self-consumption and reduced strain on the power grid.</li><li>Favourable market prices: Vertical solar panels benefit from higher electricity prices during peak hours in the electricity market (EPEX spot). The production peaks in the morning and afternoon align better with these market prices.</li><li>Higher yields in winter: Vertical solar panels generate more energy during the winter months, when electricity prices are higher.</li></ul>

Why vertical solar panels are the future Installing vertical solar panels on building facades is a smart and sustainable solution to reduce strain on the power grid. However, this technology is still underutilised by governments and grid operators. If we continue with the current trend of flat-roof solar systems, grid congestion will increase, potentially causing harmful consequences for society. Testing the future of energy generation.Can prefab construction be combined with design energy generation? Solarix strongly believes in this efficient and sustainable combination and is exploring the possibilities of integrated prefab design solar panel facades at the research location of the Eindhoven University of Technology.Since June 2021, the setup has been successfully deployed at <a href="https://www.tno.nl/nl/aandachtsgebieden/energietransitie/roadmaps/hernieuwbare-elektriciteit/zonne-energie/zonne-energie-nederland/testfaciliteit-bipv/">SolarBEAT</a> (Solar Building Elements Application Testing), an internationally recognized research facility for testing innovative solar energy systems. In this demonstration project, Solarix is testing the integration of design solar panels into prefabricated facades with various construction principles and solar panel applications.Prefab facade elements are manufactured in the factory and then quickly assembled on-site to form a facade. This makes construction faster, more efficient, and more sustainable!

Applicability in existing building elements The facade-solar-panel setup explores the integration of Solarix solar panels into two different existing building elements: an aluminum facade (in collaboration with <a href="https://www.tgm.nl/">TGM</a>) and a wooden facade (in collaboration with <a href="https://www.emergo.nl/">Emergo</a>).<ul><li>With the wooden facade element, Solarix solar panels can be quickly applied to the correct position at the construction site.</li><li>For the aluminum facade element, the panels are fully integrated into the prefab element itself and can be delivered entirely to the construction site.</li></ul>Solarix examines both solutions to ensure that the solar panels align well with the dimensions and detailing of the facade elements.Aesthetically pleasing setup Solarix doesn’t only consider the applicability in existing building elements but also the aesthetic appearance of the facade panels. A crucial part of our mission is that the sustainability of the built environment is visually appealing.During the research, we are exploring various applications of the facade solar panels. Apart from regular colored glass panels, we have also investigated the use of a color film and the integration of thin film into composite materials (produced with <a href="https://www.flexipol.nl/">Flexipol</a>).

Measuring yields insights Following a successful installation and an aesthetically pleasing setup, TNO is currently testing and monitoring several factors. Naturally, the yields are being measured along with light intensity and temperature. This allows us to validate the models we created earlier.The setup will remain in place until November 2022 and continue to be monitored, providing us with over a year&#039;s worth of data. The initial results are already positive: the integration of our Solarix solar panels into a prefabricated aluminum curtain wall shows only a very limited temperature difference compared to a more heavily ventilated non-prefabricated application.Interested in learning more about our developments? Over the recent period, we&#039;ve had the opportunity to participate in various engaging fairs and even won the PROVADA PropTech Award 2021!Rewarding Sustainable Innovation The PROVADA PropTech Award is annually bestowed at the real estate fair to a company that actualizes technological and circular solutions for the sector. From among five nominated companies, Studio Solarix clinched the coveted award. Pharos with Solar Panel Facade Wins SHARE Award

The business collective building <a href="https://pharoswork.com/">Pharos </a>in Hoofddorp won the municipal sustainability award, the SHARE Award 2021, at the beginning of October. Studio Solarix is proud to have contributed to the Pharos collective with the realization of a unique design solar panel facade.On October 6th, Councilor Marja Ruigrok presented the tenth SHARE Award during SHARE Meets Food at the De Olmenhorst estate. According to the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer, the building is &#039;a fantastic business card,&#039; as stated in the jury report.

The SHARE Award acknowledges the sustainable and innovative approach of Pharos Hoofddorp, realized through a collective effort involving over 20 innovations. Cairn Real Estate undertook the renovation and redevelopment of the existing building in collaboration with architectural firm Cube architects and interior architect Sheryl Leysner.Studio Solarix played a dual role within the Pharos collective, acting as both an advisor and the designer of the solar panel facade. Collaborating with partners Sorba, Kuijpers, Techdynamics, and Kameleon Solar, we managed to install 247m2 of solar panel facades on <a href="/en/projects/pharos-hoofddorp">Pharos</a>. This design solar panel facade compensates for 9,450 kg of CO2 emissions per year.

Inspired by nature: the new Line solar facade panel collection

How do you ensure that solar facade panels are aesthetically pleasing and provide efficient energy output? By utilizing special printing techniques and taking nature as a starting point, the latest addition to Solarix Colours emerged: the <a href="/en/line-collection">Line Collection</a>. Designer Eefiene Bolhuis takes you through the development of these new solar panels.&quot;For this collection, we aimed to introduce a more tactile sense to our designs, reflecting the &#039;imperfections&#039; of nature that inspired us,&quot; explains Eefiene. By observing vein structures on leaves, she started applying hand-drawn lines and color textures to the panels. Retaining imperfections in the drawn lines creates a natural pattern that enhances the facade&#039;s natural appearance as you walk by.

Coloring outside the lines At Studio Solarix, we are always exploring innovative and endless possibilities. Our solar panels are designed to have unique patterns, allowing for continuous variations on the facades of the built environment. The beauty of <a href="/en/line-collection">the Line collection</a> lies in how the lines are applied and combined with color on the solar panels. Eefiene explains: &#039;The lines create color nuances up close and suggest flowing movements from afar.&#039;These flowing movements are created by using a hard pen line on one panel and a softer brush that blends into it on another. Furthermore, by combining multiple lines horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or even overlaying them, we can create even more dimension.Away from dull black solar panels Because Studio Solarix&#039;s solar facade panels play with lines and transparency, they are anything but dull. The use of the latest printing techniques, inspired by nature, brings these solar panels to life.

Recently, we showcased a trial installation of our Dot solar panels in Emmen, illustrating the possibilities and gaining coverage on RTV Drenthe and Dagblad van het Noorden!<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/rijkswaterstaat/">Rijkswaterstaat</a> is exploring the use of the A37 roadside areas for solar energy generation. This unique project involves collaboration with surrounding municipalities, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/provincie-drenthe/">the Province of Drenthe</a>, and grid operators <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/enexis-b-v-/">Enexis Groep</a> and<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/rendo-groep/"> RENDO-Groep.</a> The selection process is coming up soon, and we&#039;re keeping our fingers crossed!The solar route According to Okke van Brandwijk from Rijkswaterstaat, The Drentse Zonneroute A37 aims to install solar panels along the roadsides, ramps, and various junctions. This &quot;solar route&quot; covering 300 hectares with solar panels could alleviate power grid issues in Southeast Drenthe: generating 200 megawatts for around 50,000 households (RTV Drenthe). This initiative could significantly contribute to the Netherlands&#039; climate goals, and we&#039;d love to be part of it!A promising trial There are numerous possibilities with solar panels, but Studio Solarix knows how to blend beautiful design with energy generation. We had the opportunity to set up a trial installation in the parking lot next to the town hall in Emmen, allowing locals and interested parties to see what our potential &quot;solar route&quot; might look like.Crucial is the integration of solar panels into the landscape, rendering them almost &quot;invisible.&quot; With the Dot and Line collections, inspired by nature, we can achieve this seamlessly. Studio Solarix, together with VenhoevenCS and DS Landschapsarchitecten, developed a surprising proposal for the Design Challenge &#039;Our Energy, Our Landscape!&#039; Take a look at &#039;The Butterfly Effect,&#039; where generating clean energy in an innovative and beautiful way takes center stage. Additionally, it combines restoring connections in nature and minimizing noise pollution.The Design Challenge, organized by <a href="https://www.kunstlocbrabant.nl/projecten/design-challenge-onze-energie-ons-landschap-10872">Kunstloc Brabant</a>, <a href="https://www.staatsbosbeheer.nl">Staatsbosbeheer</a>, and <a href="https://www.hetgroenewoud.com">Het Groene Woud</a>, aligns with the increasing role of sustainability in Western society. Studio Solarix designed &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039; with the multidisciplinary team of <a href="https://venhoevencs.nl">VenHoevenCS</a> and <a href="https://www.dsla.nl/">DS Landschapsarchitecten</a>.The design is essentially an ultralight web over the highway, not only intended for the challenge location at the A67 near the Strabrechtse heath but also applicable globally to infrastructure. The design enhances local ecosystems on a small scale while impacting a large-scale approach to climate change and biodiversity loss. Essentially, this principle can be applied to any road network.Starting with the &#039;little creatures&#039; Together with VenhoevenCS and DS Landschapsarchitecten, we pooled our collective expertise, passion, and creativity to establish a sustainable and achievable future. Including nature inclusivity is crucial in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss because &#039;every little creature counts.&#039;Small creatures like insects are vital in nature. Did you know that 85% of our food depends on their pollination? A span across the highway at treetop level aids in providing a safe crossing for these small creatures. This design restores crucial connections in nature.

&#039;Two Birds with One Stone&#039;What excites us even more is that the structure over the road offers a vast surface area for generating clean energy, aligning perfectly with Studio Solarix&#039;s sustainability vision. The lightweight &#039;web&#039; with its honeycomb structure can be filled with materials that harness solar energy. It&#039;s also designed to be modular, allowing growth and evolution alongside technological innovations. By utilizing the space above the road in this way, it also prevents unnecessary loss of landscape.No solar panel fields that cause biodiversity loss, but rather a &#039;web over the road&#039; that contributes to natural connections and clean energy generation.&quot;Participating in this design challenge and the creative collaboration has made the importance of preserving biodiversity clearer to me. While our company was primarily focused on sustainability, aesthetics, and circularity, biodiversity has now become an essential aspect.&quot; – Reinier Bosch – Studio SolarixNatural Sound BarrierTo maintain the focus on natural connections in the design, a simple yet effective sound barrier has been implemented. The designed structure not only generates solar energy but also allows nitrogen and particulate matter to settle into the soil. This enriches the ground alongside the road, facilitating tree growth. A significant stretch of forest significantly reduces the noise in the adjacent natural area. In other words, a natural solution as a sound barrier.Enchanting Like a ButterflyAt Studio Solarix, we prioritize ensuring that our sustainability solutions not only offer energy benefits but also look aesthetically pleasing. We found this aspect crucial in &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039; proposal.The beautiful shadow patterns and variations in colors and materials create a captivating experience while driving. Just as one can be mesmerized by the colors and patterns of a butterfly, this design is functional and boasts an attractive aesthetic. The &#039;web&#039; could become a symbol of how we should treat nature, maintaining connections rather than losing them.

All in all, &#039;The Butterfly Effect&#039; provides an original and contemporary response to the central question of the design challenge: &#039;How can we create a sound-absorbing design that links energy generation with the surrounding nature and also stimulates imagination?&#039; Clean energy is generated through the spanning structure, the forest strip acts as a natural sound barrier, and the entire design captivates the imagination with its color variations and shadow dances. Smart solar panel facade for the Pharos project

The sustainable office building <a href="https://pharoswork.com/building-by-pharos/">Pharos</a>, designed by Architectenbureau Cube architecten, next to Hoofddorp CS station has recently been completed. With an energy-generating, smart, and aesthetically pleasing solar panel facade by Studio Solarix, Pharos demonstrates that the facade of the future has now been realized! Aiming for further reduction of CO2 emissions.Pharos, an office building from 2003, was targeted for transformation into the healthiest working community in Europe, emphasizing circularity and energy supply. It&#039;s set to embody the circular economy. Cairn Real Estate renovated and redeveloped the existing structure, while interior architect Sheryl Leysner and her team designed the interior spaces. Studio Solarix was involved in the redevelopment as both advisor and designer, collaborating with partners Sorba, Kuijpers, Techdynamics, and Kameleon on the realization of 247m2 of solar panel facades at<a href="/en/projects/pharos-hoofddorp"> Pharos</a>. Through this collaboration, we take another significant step towards our ambition to achieve 140km2 of Solar Design panels by 2040, offsetting 7.2 billion CO2 annually.

How did we approach Pharos? It was clear early on that we wanted to create the facade of the future for <a href="/en/projects/pharos-hoofddorp">Pharos</a> by implementing a smart, sustainable solar panel facade in the new section that generates energy. Additionally, with the Solarix facade, we aimed to make a beautiful architectural statement to significantly enhance the building&#039;s appearance.Our Solar Design facade draws inspiration from the existing facade panels but incorporates solar cells using a special printing technique that adds depth, color, and vibrancy. Working closely with the facade builder and architect, we optimally integrated the Solarix solar panels into the building. We&#039;re incredibly proud to have partnered with Cairn to bring this Solar Design facade to fruition.

Special LED facade at Pharos The LED addition aimed to give the building something extra—to enable it to communicate with its surroundings. The building previously had a harsh appearance that we sought to soften using the LEDs. It&#039;s about making the building &#039;breathe,&#039; welcoming you as you arrive. These LEDs react to incoming trains and movement around the building.

What makes Solarix so smart and beneficial for commercial buildings? Solar Design facade panels are highly suitable for application in projects starting from a facade surface of 100m2. In the case of commercial buildings, there&#039;s often more facade surface available compared to roof surface. Solar facade panels are, therefore, a more interesting alternative to install than solar panels on the roof.Moreover, it keeps the roof surface available, allowing space for things like rooftop gardens. Solarix Solar Design panels can thus make a significant contribution to companies by both sustainability and enhancing the building&#039;s aesthetics. The panels also contribute to meeting BENG requirements in terms of sustainability.Studio Solarix develops beautiful new facade systems that generate energy and ultimately bring financial benefits. <a href="/en/projects/pharos-hoofddorp">Pharos</a> is the ultimate example of this!

Green mission, green fingers

It&#039;s spring! Are your fingers starting to itch? Ours are! On March 24th, the kick-off for <a href="https://degezondestad.org/projecten/22/de-tropentuin">De Tropentuin</a> took place in the Museum Garden at the Tropeninstituut, where we now grow our vegetables and utilize the communal herb garden. Studio Solarix not only has a green mission but also green fingers!Initiated by De Gezonde Stad (The Healthy City), a neighborhood vegetable garden has been established behind the Tropenmuseum since 2018, featuring a pick-your-own herb garden, a greenhouse, a worm hotel, and twenty vegetable garden beds. <a href="https://degezondestad.org/projecten/22/de-tropentuin">De Tropentuin</a> is beautifully situated between KIT and Oosterpark and is part of the Museumtuin, designed by DS Landscape Architects.

At <a href="https://degezondestad.org/projecten/22/de-tropentuin">De Tropentuin</a>, various collaborative sessions and fun activities are organized. On March 24th, the opening of the vegetable garden season took place. In collaboration with Nancy Wiltink from Moestuin School Amsterdam, there was a starter kit available for creating your own Tropenbak. Rowin from Compostier provided explanations about the worm hotel, and the herb picking garden was made possible in part by Abbing Buitenhof. It&#039;s a great collaboration between local residents, businesses, and sustainable initiatives, and Studio Solarix is thrilled to be part of it.The planting season has commenced, and we have our own Tropenbak, eagerly anticipating Solarix lunches this summer with our own vegetables. To shed more light on the innovation climate in the Netherlands, Cobouw launched the video series &#039;Gamechangers.&#039; Marloes and Reinier shared insights into Solarix&#039;s journey, revealing strategies to navigate these challenges and pave the way for innovation.

Solar panels in the fields? Stick them to facades! Currently, there&#039;s still significant investment solely in rooftop or field solar panels, yet there are over 250 square kilometers of available facades in the Netherlands. Studio Solarix explained to Verweij and van Belzen that these facades represent potential energy sources. Why wouldn&#039;t we utilize them?Gamechangers highlights the numerous biases in the construction industry. Studio Solarix demonstrates that innovation is indeed feasible and achievable. The innovative Pharos building in Hoofddorp stands as one of many examples. This old structure has been adorned by Studio Solarix with colorful, energy-efficient facades that not only generate power efficiently but also look aesthetically pleasing. This brings us closer to our dream of effectively outfitting as many facades in the Netherlands with solar panels without making buildings &#039;ugly&#039;.

Dreaming and Doing The aspirations of Studio Solarix are not solely about profit but mostly about sustainable endeavors. That&#039;s why we are working towards outfitting the majority of facades in the Netherlands with our Solar Design facades within 5 years. Additionally, we are moving towards a future with circular solar panels applicable everywhere. However, we&#039;re not just dreaming; we&#039;re taking action!There are numerous possibilities in the Dutch construction industry, and Studio Solarix hopes, much like Gamechangers, to inform architects and developers about innovations. We know that with beautiful design facade panels, we can also generate energy. What can the Dutch construction industry do? The turnaround time could be faster... This is already being achieved abroad. Who will step up now?The follow-up: Trends &amp; Transitions The Gamechangers episode had an exciting continuation. On March 25th, Marloes joined the leading online event discussing how to make construction faster, more sustainable, and future-proof.
