For the existing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ing.nl/">ING</a> office in Almere City, Solarix has renovated the facade with aesthetic, energy-generating solar panels. ING owns several buildings across the Netherlands and is actively working to make its real estate portfolio more sustainable. This project marks the start of a broader ambition: to make the bank’s network of offices more sustainable through smart, aesthetic energy solutions.As a first step, Solarix collaborated with ING to explore the potential of adding a solar façade to the existing building. The process began with a<a target="_blank" href="/en/solarscan"> SolarScan </a>— an in-depth analysis that provides detailed insight into the possibilities of integrating Solarix solar panels within a specific project. Our structural and building physics experts carried out an extensive solar study, including shadow analysis, and assessed design options, positioning, and detailing of the panels. The SolarScan thus forms the basis for architectural advice, a targeted cost estimate, and a calculation of the expected payback period.Based on these insights, a proposal was developed and elaborated into a permit application. The aesthetic review committee responded positively and expressed appreciation for the careful and subtle way in which the solar panels were integrated into the existing facade.In total, 165 m² of Solarix solar facade panels were added, demonstrating how the renovation of existing buildings can contribute to future-oriented sustainability. In close collaboration with ING, we sought a solution that both offers aesthetic value and supports the building’s energy ambitions. The result is a refined solar facade that harmoniously blends with the existing architecture.

The project

The solar facade has been designed to blend seamlessly into the existing architectural appearance of the Almere office, while still standing out as a recognisable addition. The solar panels are carefully matched to the colour palette of the brick facade, subtly contributing to a renewed, future-proof aesthetic. A total of 164 Solarix facade panels have been installed, covering an area of 165 m², of which 158 m² are active and 7 m² are dummies. Of the total area, 138 m² consist of coloured panels matching the brick architecture, and 27 m² of black panels applied to the technical room on the roof.

For the main facade, panels from the Solarix Line High Efficiency collection were chosen, offering an attractive combination of aesthetics and high performance. These panels combine a warm, natural hue with black accents, allowing them to integrate elegantly into the facade while providing excellent energy yield. The suede black solar panels on the technical room create a calm yet powerful contrast, enhancing the sleek and unified look of the overall building design. By carefully balancing colour, dimensions, and positioning, a facade has been created that not only generates energy but also enhances the architectural quality of the building. To determine the right colour and most suitable design for the solar facade, Solarix worked together with the client to test different samples directly on the façade of the ING office in Almere. By assessing the colours, gloss and textures in natural daylight, it became clear which option best complemented the existing brick architecture. Through this collaborative process, a careful choice was made that enhances the building’s appearance while contributing to ING’s sustainability ambitions.

Solarix renovated the facade of ING’s Almere office with aesthetic solar façade panels. A total of 165 m² was added, 158 m² active. The Line High Efficiency panels provide colour, performance and a sustainable look that fits the architecture.

The renovation of De Kikker, originally designed by Liesbeth van der Pol of <a href="https://dokarchitecten.nl/">DOK architects</a>, is an initiative of the <a href="https://www.amsterdam.nl/">Municipality of Amsterdam</a>. In the summer of 2024, the building underwent a complete metamorphosis. The outdated, bright green plating made way for custom-made, colorful solar panels from Solarix. Dok Architects, as the original architect, was approached by the municipality and engaged Solarix to design a new, suitable color scheme and facade solar panels that seamlessly match the renewed design.

The renovation results in a striking, colorful facade of solar panels in various shades of green and yellow, finished with textured glass. This new facade gives the building a cheerful and lively appearance, perfectly matched to the playful character of the two schools, the daycare center and the GG&amp;GD that are located here. At the same time, the design makes optimal use of solar energy. A total of 1444 m² of facade panels were renewed, of which 160 m² consists of dummy panels.

Making public buildings future-proof with facade solar panels is of great importance. The Municipality of Amsterdam is taking a pioneering role in this with the renovation of primary school De Kikker. Amsterdam gains a new sustainable landmark: De Kikker school now features the largest coloured Solarix solar facade in the Netherlands. Its 1,444 m² of green textured panels give the building a vibrant look while generating solar energy.

UNStudio has designed One Helix, one of the most sustainable laboratory buildings in the world, located on the Amsterdam University Medical Centre (Amsterdam UMC) campus. This highly ambitious and innovative design integrates cutting-edge sustainability features while maintaining an elegant and intelligent architectural approach.The building, developed in collaboration with Amsterdam UMC, De Vries en Verburg, UNStudio, SolarNRG, Kenwell, Wijnveen, and Solarix, optimises energy generation on all four sides. Solar panels are seamlessly incorporated on top of the fins and as a façade for the technical space on the roof, ensuring a balanced and efficient energy yield.The 6,515 m² structure combines laboratory and office spaces with supporting functions and amenities. Light grey Solarix panels frame the entire top band of the building, while suede black panels adorn the five wings, providing a distinctive aesthetic visible from the interior on every floor.Designed to become one of the most sustainable laboratory environments in the world Designed as an all-electric, net energy-positive building, One Helix is built to maintain net zero emissions and has achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification. Additionally, the project targets a low embodied carbon footprint, with an MPG score of ≤0.6. The result is a striking architectural landmark where energy generation is seamlessly integrated into the design. The integration of solar energy into the facade of One Helix has been carefully designed for both functionality and aesthetics. The light grey Solarix panels from the Mono collection (M-636 Light Granite) frame the upper band of the building, creating a subtle and harmonious appearance. For the fins, black suede panels (B-900) were specifically chosen to ensure optimal energy generation. By strategically applying colour and material, the solar facade enhances both the energy efficiency and the architectural quality of the design.

Sustainability, climate adaptation and energy saving are important spearheads for the redevelopment of the former data center in De Kwekerij. Less waste and a rapid transformation through maximum reuse of the existing concrete, elevator, stair constructions and steel facade panels. The new materials used in the facade are mainly black aesthetic solar panels. In this way, a sustainable second skin is placed around the building, giving the building a sturdy, robust appearance and also acting as an energy plant.

The facade design was developed in collaboration with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.morstudio.nl/">MOR Studio</a> in one of our standard sizes. Dummy panels have been used for the different panel sizes. A black panel was chosen that is somewhere between matte and glossy, with the dummy panels having the same appearance. The facade is mounted on the existing steelwork, which has been expanded in some places to allow the horizontal beams to be attached. With this building, we show that we can also create beautiful facade solution with black facade solar panels.

Solarix was asked by pv installer <a target="_blank" href="https://wattco.nl/">Wattco</a> and contractor <a target="_blank" href="https://vm-d.nl/">van Mierlo Dinkq</a> to think about the solar facade during the engineering. In collaboration with MOR Studio, a layout of the facade was designed based on our standard size of 600 x 1200 mm. MOR then made a choice from the various options and finishes for the panels. This was a great step towards an affordable, aesthetic and energy-generating facade. <a href="https://hommersensolar.nl/">Hommersen Solar</a> is an installer of solar panels and built their own sustainable business hall with office in Zwaag in 2023. In addition to the standard solar panels on the roof, the company also wanted to show that solar panels on the facade are also possible. Above the entrance, they have included a number of large coloured facade solar panels in the colour ocker. The eye-catcher of the building, but also a vision of the future of solar.

Hommersen Solar wanted a nice, cheerful color for the facade solar panels. They were enthusiastic about one of the designs in a large dot that we had previously used in a project for Rijkswaterstaat. Solarix developed the solar panels and detailing and soon later delivered the colored solar panels with mounting system to the customer.

After Hommersen Solar saw the possibilities of Solarix solar panels at a trade fair, they were immediately contacted to see what was possible for their new business premises. After choosing the colour and dimensions, the order quickly became a fact. Hommersen installs and assembles the panels himself. Solarix is proud of the innovative solar facade that significantly contributes to the climate adaptation of the new dsm-firmenich headquarters in Maastricht. This project, developed by <a href="https://edge.tech/">EDGE</a> and <a href="https://www.3wrealestate.nl/">3W real estate</a>, and realized in collaboration with <a href="https://www.broekbakema.nl/">Broekbakema</a>, <a href="https://www.bam.com/en">BAM</a>, and<a href="https://ldsenergy.nl/"> LDS energy</a>, marks a milestone in sustainable construction and serves as a prime example of how buildings can become Paris-proof. The new dsm-firmenich headquarters emerged from the renovation and expansion of the historic Ambachtsschool and Euroscoop Cinema, creating a blend of heritage and modern sustainability.

The innovative Solarix solar facade, integrated into the new construction section of the building, comprises 521 m² of panels, of which 465 m² are active and 56 m² are dummies. With an expected annual yield of 36,000 kWh and an estimated CO2 reduction of 26,772 kg per year, the facade makes a significant contribution to the sustainability of the headquarters. Solarix closely collaborated with Broekbakema to develop special panels that perfectly match the building’s design. These panels, in a blend of grey tones from the Dot collection, are subtly integrated into the facade, creating a harmonious whole with the concrete and glass elements.

The new dsm-firmenich headquarters is the first national monument in the Netherlands to achieve Paris-proof status, meaning it meets the climate requirements of the Paris Agreement. The building features rooftop solar panels, excellent insulation, efficient HVAC systems, smart lighting, and water-saving measures. This holistic approach minimizes long-term environmental impacts and resulted in the new construction section achieving the highest sustainability certification, BREEAM Outstanding. This certification was partly achieved because the Solarix facade solar panels received a Category 1 classification in the National Environmental Database for this project. Solar facade contributes to Paris-proof status of new dsm-firmenich headquarters in Maastricht. This project, developed by Edge and 3W Real Estate, and realized in collaboration with Broekbakema, BAM, and LDS Energy, marks a milestone in sustainable construction and is a prime example of how buildings can be made Paris-proof.

Villa Lichtenberg is designed as a sustainable home that is low in energy and maintenance with a combination of unique qualities. The villa is located in a rolling green landscape with a double living floor downstairs, a bedroom floor above and a roof structure.Solarix was asked to work with <a href="https://wvwa.nl/">architect Willem van Winsen</a> and the clients to design the facade of the bedroom floor as an energy-generating facade. The appearance and distribution of the facade panels was important, without the association with standard solar panels. The result is a rhythmic pattern of various custom-made coloured design solar panels in the facades.

The facade consists of different sizes of solar panels, creating a varied image. The panels themselves have a mesh pattern of moss green and sand, which gives an almost traditional look. The energy-generating facade produces sufficient energy to meet the daily energy demand of the home, including the heat pump and the electric car.

Solarix was asked by the architect and client to help design the facade early in the project. Ultimately, Solarix was commissioned by the client to take care of the realization of the facade. A beautifully designed, low-energy and maintained villa with a complete energy-generating facade. The facade is designed in a rhythmic pattern of various custom-made coloured solar panels in a combination of moss and sand tones.

Rotterdam boasts a new unique city attraction: Rif010, a surf spot in an old canal in the heart of the city. Rotterdammers will soon be able to enjoy a 1.5 meter high artificial river wave lasting 14 seconds.27m2 of silver-gray solar panels have been installed on the roof of the beautiful Rif010 building. Their silver-gray color blends perfectly with the glittering water and sports activities, creating stunning views, especially from the surrounding high-rise buildings.The solar panels contribute to the lowest possible environmental impact that RIF010 strives for. Rotterdam has a new city attraction: Rif010, a surf spot in an old canal with a 1.5-meter high artificial wave. The roof of Rif010 features 27m² of silver-grey solar panels, perfectly blending with the surroundings and contributing to minimal environmental impact.

In the renewed Bajes Kwartier, Building H is being given a second life as student housing. This iconic project, developed by AM, is part of the transformation of the former Bijlmer Bajes into a sustainable, green urban district.For the front façade, architecture firm OMA has designed an innovative solar façade that seamlessly combines aesthetics with energy generation. The façade features 130 suede-black Solarix solar panels, integrated into prefab aluminium frames, covering a total surface area of 193 m². This creates a striking architectural statement while ensuring a perfect fit with the overall design. Loft Office is a striking example of sustainable innovation and aesthetic renewal. The building, originally designed by VMX Architects in 2008, will undergo a renovation and upgrade in 2024, with an extra floor to crown the building. The existing wooden rear facade needed to be replaced, which offered an excellent opportunity for the owners, Stonemedia, to opt for a fully sustainable facade with solar panels.

VMX Architects have seized this opportunity with both hands and realized a visionary design. The new facade, consisting of stylish matte black solar panels, not only ensures optimal energy yield, but also enhances the aesthetics of the building. The addition of the extra floor at the front and the sustainable solar facade at the rear are integrated in a beautiful rhythm, which contributes to a coherent and modern appearance of the building.

Polderlab Delft, designed by ZUS [Zones Urbaines Sensibles], is a transformed old farm, situated in the middle of the landscape between Rotterdam and Delft. The building functions as an autarkic monolith, raised above the ground. Polderlab Delft becomes a place to reflect, design, research, create, test and discuss new types of landscapes, innovative ways of living together with water, future-proof crops and sustainable systems.The colours of the complex merge with the typical Dutch skies and celebrate the lush green landscape of meadows, orchards and vegetable gardens. This harmonious effect is enhanced by the integration of Solarix solar panels in the roof. The mist blue solar panels are carefully matched to the colour of the building and contribute to a visual unity that blends in with the surrounding landscape.

For this project, a Solarix solar roof with mist blue panels from the Mono Collection was chosen. This colour fits seamlessly with the architect&#039;s vision to merge the building with the typical Dutch skies. The panels subtly reflect the sky, which uniquely enhances the dynamics between the building and the surrounding nature.The roof of Polderlab Delft is equipped with 218 m² of Solarix solar panels, of which 122 m² are active. The remaining panels are dummies, carefully integrated to create an aesthetic whole and to take into account the elements present on the roof. Polderlab Delft, designed by ZUS, is a transformed old farm, located in the middle of the landscape between Rotterdam and Delft. Misty blue solar panels, coordinated with the building, form a visual unity with the typical Dutch skies and the surrounding landscape.

The sustainable <a href="https://pharoswork.com/">Pharos</a> business complex next to Hoofddorp CS station had very sustainable ambitions for redevelopment. Pharos now shows with its energy-producing, smart and beautiful facade from Solarix that the facade of the future has now been realized!Pharos is an office building from 2003. The goal of clients Cairn (now <a href="https://www.schroders.com/nl-nl/nl/professionele/">Schroder Capital</a>) is to transform the building into the healthiest working community in Europe in which circularity and energy supply are central. Part of the building has been renovated, but a new part has also been added. One of the objectives was the realization of an energy-generating facade.In collaboration with <a href="https://cube-architecten.nl/">Cube architects</a>, Solarix has proposed a facade that connects, softens and makes the building more sustainable.

The Solarix solar panels are located in the two golden bands that connect the different building parts. The coloured solar panels are included in aluminium composite carrier elements that can be applied to the various building components. There is a gradient in the colour of the panel so that a dynamic effect is created over the building.

Solarix has been involved throughout the entire process as one of the first initiators of the development of Pharos. The office building of engineering firm <a href="https://www.kuijpers.nl/">Kuijpers</a> has a scoop. This is the first building in the world where Solar Design has been applied to the facade. Kuijpers has been an ambassador for this application from the start. By thinking from a design perspective, the redevelopment made it possible to combine the generation of sustainable energy with the creation of a new identity for the building. In the dark, the building turns into an art object; the integrated LED lighting changes colour with the seasons.

The solar façade of Kuijpers was designed as a new skin for the building, with all connections and corner details carefully considered. The colored solar panels were integrated into various aluminum composite elements, allowing for angled placement of the panels. The use of different color shades created a vibrant and warm façade. As such, the innovative Kuijpers solar façade has served as an important example in the transition toward sustainable energy façades.

On behalf of the <a href="https://www.middelburg.nl/">Municipality of Middelburg</a>, Solarix has made the <a href="https://www.zeelandtheaters.nl/theaters/schouwburg-middelburg/">city theatre</a> in the historic city more sustainable. With this project, the municipality wants to show that it is also possible to generate sustainable energy in an architecturally valuable building in a historic environment.During the design process, Solarix took the existing architecture as a starting point. The colours in the brickwork and window frames and the function and appearance of the building were examined. The vertically placed panels therefore decorate both sides of the main entrance of the Theatre, like wings.

In 2021, Solarix received the PROVADA Proptech Award from Daan van der Vorm. The Solarix solar panels are incorporated into the facade of the Optopper, which means that the small house generates enough energy to be energy neutral. Additional solar panels or a green roof can be placed on the roofs. The panels are part of a sloping overhang where the corner panels are dummies with the same appearance. The Solarix panels from the gray Dot collection have a chic look and match the wood and frames perfectly.Standard dimensions were used in this project, which suits the prefabricated houses. An affordable sustainable home has been developed.

Client Vorm has brought together several parties to devise and develop a prefab concept that can ultimately be scaled up affordably. Solarix supplies the panels and the mounting system in a standard version so that they can always be properly integrated within the Optopper concept. The world of waste processing is changing. Sustainability and circular thinking are important themes in the industry and for client <a href="https://www.vanhappencontainers.nl/">Van Happen</a>. Their request was a facade that also radiates these values; a facade that shows Van Happen&#039;s activities and at the same time generates energy.The arrows in this design visualize the collection and sorting of waste by Van Happen. The arrows consist of coloured and even lightweight, circular solar panels. The project thus serves as an example of how to make industrial estates more sustainable in an attractive way.

In this project, a combination of regular glass/glass solar panels in colour with an innovative circular lightweight solar panel was chosen. Two shades of gray have been applied in an enlarged dot that match the aesthetic requirements for this area. A solar film has been developed and tested for the circular Solarix / Solarge solar panels with the same pattern in green. A Terra and ochre panels have been added at the entrance. Another challenge in the project was the mounting system, as the substrate was a corrugated sheet sandwich panel, and we were dealing with 2 types of panels. We were able to solve this with an adjustment to our mounting system. This assignment has stimulated Solarix to think further about our facade solar panels and to take a new step in our pursuit of a circular product.

Solarix and Van Happen took the initiative for this special project. The research and development processes have been made possible, among other things, by the subsidy <a href="https://www.brabantgeeftenergie.nl/">Brabant Gives Energy</a> from the Province of North Brabant. In Helmond, the ambition is to make Brainport Smart District the smartest district in the world. Various challenges were issued to select the best parties to achieve this. In the third challenge, Solarix was one of the innovative parties that were chosen to develop a plan on one of the plots.Solarix forms a consortium with <a href="https://cravastgoed.nl/">CRA Vastgoed</a>, <a href="https://cube-architecten.nl/">Cube architecten</a> and <a href="https://www.renekuiken.nl/">Kuiken Urbanism</a> and is developing a &#039;Sun Smart Living&#039; concept. This consists of 3 different housing blocks that are parametrically designed and positioned so that optimal energy can be generated with the facades.The use of the coloured Solarix solar panels in the facades is an important part of the total architectural design, but also of the total energy concept.The aim is to even make the homes energy-producing, with the energy also being stored in a SolarEis system. In addition, the pre-investment required by setting up a small energy cooperative for the collective energy supply has also been considered.In addition to the energy concept, the plans also pay a lot of attention to sustainable and circular use of materials, green areas and the value of a social community.The first homes are currently being developed and Sun Smart Living is awaiting a plot allocation.
