The first prototype of the Solarix Habitat Panel will be unveiled at the BLOK Pavilion (a JAJO initative) during Dutch Design Week 2026. With this launch, we are introducing not only a new facade element but also a broader vision for nature-inclusive solar architecture. Through the Habitat Panel, Solarix explores how building facades can play a more active role in the urban ecosystem: generating renewable energy, contributing to architectural identity, and creating thoughtfully integrated habitats for urban wildlife.

The challenge

Our buildings are becoming increasingly energy-efficient, but at the same time, they offer less and less space for birds and other wildlife. As facades become better insulated and natural nesting sites disappear, urban biodiversity is coming under increasing pressure. At Solarix, we see this as an opportunity to rethink facade design, bringing energy and ecology together.

The concept

A typical Solarix solar facade combines active solar panels with dummy panels to create a cohesive architectural design. This existing facade concept presented an opportunity to rethink the role of these non-active elements: what if they could also contribute to biodiversity?

This idea led to the development of the Solarix Habitat Panel, an integrated biodiversity module that fits seamlessly into the Solarix facade system. Rather than adding nesting facilities to buildings as an afterthought, the Habitat Panel integrates biodiversity directly into the architecture. Thanks to its modular design, the panel can also be incorporated into prefabricated facade systems.

From October 17, 2026, the Solarix Habitat Panel will be on display at the BLOK Pavilion during Dutch Design Week at Machinekamerplein in Eindhoven.

BLOK brings together groundbreaking innovations in sustainable, biobased, and carbon-positive construction in a traveling pavilion. After Dutch Design Week, the pavilion will tour the Netherlands, showcasing how the construction industry can evolve and sparking conversations about the future of building.

A big thank you to all partners who contributed to bringing this innovative project to life!Come and discover what the future of sustainable building looks like!
