Solar facades: The beautiful source of solar energy in a sustainable city

Our Solar Design panels were included in the innovative and creative tender for the Stadsbrug location Weert from architect <a href="https://www.burokade.nl/projecten/de-brugwachter-weert/">Buro Kade</a> in collaboration with S<a href="https://www.smtbv.nl/">SMT bouw &amp; vastgoed</a>, <a href="https://bpem.nl/">Boink Project- &amp; Energiemanagement B.V</a>,<a href="http://www.jacobsam.nl/"> John Jacobs Advies &amp; Management</a> and Solarix. With the total design and the integrated Solarix solar panels, this consortium shows that they can create the buildings of the future!

The project

The brown colored Solarix solar panels are an important part of the overall facade design. By replacing another facade material with Solarix energy-generating panels, the roof surface can be used as a public green area.

Process

In Helmond, the ambition is to make Brainport Smart District the smartest district in the world. Various challenges were issued to select the best parties to achieve this. In the third challenge, Solarix was one of the innovative parties that were chosen to develop a plan on one of the plots.Solarix forms a consortium with <a href="https://cravastgoed.nl/">CRA Vastgoed</a>, <a href="https://cube-architecten.nl/">Cube architecten</a> and <a href="https://www.renekuiken.nl/">Kuiken Urbanism</a> and is developing a &#039;Sun Smart Living&#039; concept. This consists of 3 different housing blocks that are parametrically designed and positioned so that optimal energy can be generated with the facades.The use of the coloured Solarix solar panels in the facades is an important part of the total architectural design, but also of the total energy concept.The aim is to even make the homes energy-producing, with the energy also being stored in a SolarEis system. In addition, the pre-investment required by setting up a small energy cooperative for the collective energy supply has also been considered.In addition to the energy concept, the plans also pay a lot of attention to sustainable and circular use of materials, green areas and the value of a social community.The first homes are currently being developed and Sun Smart Living is awaiting a plot allocation.

Colour and pattern for the solar panels were important in the Brainport Smart Living project. The Solarix solar panels are the leading facade material within the project. Together with the architect, green colour tones and different patterns were chosen, for a lively, but also subtle image. The design of panels is also very nicely coordinated with the other materials in the plan, such as the wooden cladding and window frames.

In addition to the consortium for design and realization consisting of <a href="https://cravastgoed.nl/">CRA Vastgoed</a>, <a href="https://cube-architecten.nl/">Cube architecten</a> and <a href="https://www.renekuiken.nl/">Kuiken Urbanism</a> and Solarix, Ridge and <a href="https://www.hve-nl.com/">HVE</a> are involved in the energy concept. The <a href="https://vbgroep.nl/">VB groep</a> will take care of the implementation.

New construction

In the heart of Amsterdam, the empty Hudson&#039;s Bay department store has been converted into the new headquarters of online payment platform <a href="https://www.adyen.com/">Adyen</a>. As part of the sustainability of this monumental building, Solarix provides specially designed solar panels in a matte black colour.Adyen is having the two vacant new-build buildings, on the Rokin and the monumental Vleeshal behind it, redeveloped in collaboration with contractor <a href="https://www.vanwijnen.nl/">Van Wijnen</a>, interior design firm <a href="https://tank.nl/">Tank</a> and architectural firm <a href="https://rijnboutt.nl/">Rijnboutt</a>, project organization <a href="https://www.sgs.nl/">SGS</a>, real estate manager <a href="https://www.cbre.nl/">CBRE</a> and technical service provider <a href="https://www.engie.nl/">ENGIE</a>.

The redevelopment of the monumental building focuses on Adyen&#039;s sustainable and circular vision, which fits in well with Solarix&#039;s vision to accelerate the energy transition.For example, one of Adyen&#039;s most important wishes is to make maximum use of the materials already present. According to branch director Wesly Verhaert, Adyen &quot;goes for the BREEAM Very Good to Excellent certificate, a quality label for minimal environmental impact during construction and the subsequent operational phase.&quot;In addition to reusing materials, Adyen also looked for the possibility of generating energy with one of the three new office buildings. Roy Leegwater, project leader at ENGIE Services West, says: “By installing solar panels and designing the restaurant kitchen differently, Rokin 49 and the Vleeshal will become gas-free buildings.”However, given the monumental status of the buildings, such as the old Vleeshal, regular roof solar panels are not an option. Architect Rijnboutt and client ENGIE therefore opted for an aesthetic solution with the design solar panels from Solarix.

Circular construction

It made sense to equip one of the sloping roofs of the Vleeshal with solar panels. Partly due to its location in the centre of Amsterdam and the associated aesthetic requirements, it was important that the solar panels fit into the image of the monumental interior and did not shine too much. The dimensions of the solar panels also had to match the existing rhythm of the building. Solarix, together with the architect, looked for a matte black colour that most closely matches the existing roof panels and for attractive dimensions. In addition, a mounting system was used suitable for glass/glass panels without a frame. The custom-made aesthetic solar panels were combined with an attractive, virtually invisible mounting system.

Solarix worked with the architect to find a matte black color that most closely matches the existing roof tiles. Various shades of gray were developed in this process to achieve the right match. As an additional addition, it was decided to equip the solar panels with frosted glass for minimal reflection and light reflection.

Solarix is proud of the innovative solar facade that significantly contributes to the climate adaptation of the new dsm-firmenich headquarters in Maastricht. This project, developed by <a href="https://edge.tech/">EDGE</a> and <a href="https://www.3wrealestate.nl/">3W real estate</a>, and realized in collaboration with <a href="https://www.broekbakema.nl/">Broekbakema</a>, <a href="https://www.bam.com/en">BAM</a>, and<a href="https://ldsenergy.nl/"> LDS energy</a>, marks a milestone in sustainable construction and serves as a prime example of how buildings can become Paris-proof. The new dsm-firmenich headquarters emerged from the renovation and expansion of the historic Ambachtsschool and Euroscoop Cinema, creating a blend of heritage and modern sustainability.

Estimated annual CO2 reduction of the solar facade of dsm-firmenich headquarters

The innovative Solarix solar facade, integrated into the new construction section of the building, comprises 521 m² of panels, of which 465 m² are active and 56 m² are dummies. With an expected annual yield of 36,000 kWh and an estimated CO2 reduction of 26,772 kg per year, the facade makes a significant contribution to the sustainability of the headquarters. Solarix closely collaborated with Broekbakema to develop special panels that perfectly match the building’s design. These panels, in a blend of grey tones from the Dot collection, are subtly integrated into the facade, creating a harmonious whole with the concrete and glass elements.

The new dsm-firmenich headquarters is the first national monument in the Netherlands to achieve Paris-proof status, meaning it meets the climate requirements of the Paris Agreement. The building features rooftop solar panels, excellent insulation, efficient HVAC systems, smart lighting, and water-saving measures. This holistic approach minimizes long-term environmental impacts and resulted in the new construction section achieving the highest sustainability certification, BREEAM Outstanding. This certification was partly achieved because the Solarix facade solar panels received a Category 1 classification in the National Environmental Database for this project.
