Solar facades: The beautiful source of solar energy in a sustainable city

In 2021, Solarix designed the color scheme for a 150 m² solar panel facade on behalf of <a target="_blank" href="https://intelligentsolar.eu/">Solar Intelligence</a> and in collaboration with the architectural firm <a target="_blank" href="https://holar.no/">Ola Roald AS </a>. Specifically for this project, Solarix developed the red color scheme, fully tailored to the architect’s wishes. The result is a unique BIPV facade (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) that is both functional and visually perfectly integrated into the architectural design.

Villa Lichtenberg is designed as a sustainable home that is low in energy and maintenance with a combination of unique qualities. The villa is located in a rolling green landscape with a double living floor downstairs, a bedroom floor above and a roof structure.Solarix was asked to work with <a href="https://wvwa.nl/">architect Willem van Winsen</a> and the clients to design the facade of the bedroom floor as an energy-generating facade. The appearance and distribution of the facade panels was important, without the association with standard solar panels. The result is a rhythmic pattern of various custom-made coloured design solar panels in the facades.

The facade consists of different sizes of solar panels, creating a varied image. The panels themselves have a mesh pattern of moss green and sand, which gives an almost traditional look. The energy-generating facade produces sufficient energy to meet the daily energy demand of the home, including the heat pump and the electric car.

Solarix was asked by the architect and client to help design the facade early in the project. Ultimately, Solarix was commissioned by the client to take care of the realization of the facade. A beautifully designed, low-energy and maintained villa with a complete energy-generating facade. The facade is designed in a rhythmic pattern of various custom-made coloured solar panels in a combination of moss and sand tones.

New construction

The renovation of De Kikker, originally designed by Liesbeth van der Pol of <a href="https://dokarchitecten.nl/">DOK architects</a>, is an initiative of the <a href="https://www.amsterdam.nl/">Municipality of Amsterdam</a>. In the summer of 2024, the building underwent a complete metamorphosis. The outdated, bright green plating made way for custom-made, colorful solar panels from Solarix. Dok Architects, as the original architect, was approached by the municipality and engaged Solarix to design a new, suitable color scheme and facade solar panels that seamlessly match the renewed design.

The renovation results in a striking, colorful facade of solar panels in various shades of green and yellow, finished with textured glass. This new facade gives the building a cheerful and lively appearance, perfectly matched to the playful character of the two schools, the daycare center and the GG&amp;GD that are located here. At the same time, the design makes optimal use of solar energy. A total of 1444 m² of facade panels were renewed, of which 160 m² consists of dummy panels.

Making public buildings future-proof with facade solar panels is of great importance. The Municipality of Amsterdam is taking a pioneering role in this with the renovation of primary school De Kikker. Proces

The developed project was chosen to make a small mock-up of the solar panels on the building. To be able to assess the design of the building and to better map and prepare the total redevelopment of the building.

Amsterdam gains a new sustainable landmark: De Kikker school now features the largest coloured Solarix solar facade in the Netherlands. Its 1,444 m² of green textured panels give the building a vibrant look while generating solar energy.

Solarix is proud of the innovative solar facade that significantly contributes to the climate adaptation of the new dsm-firmenich headquarters in Maastricht. This project, developed by <a href="https://edge.tech/">EDGE</a> and <a href="https://www.3wrealestate.nl/">3W real estate</a>, and realized in collaboration with <a href="https://www.broekbakema.nl/">Broekbakema</a>, <a href="https://www.bam.com/en">BAM</a>, and<a href="https://ldsenergy.nl/"> LDS energy</a>, marks a milestone in sustainable construction and serves as a prime example of how buildings can become Paris-proof. The new dsm-firmenich headquarters emerged from the renovation and expansion of the historic Ambachtsschool and Euroscoop Cinema, creating a blend of heritage and modern sustainability.

The innovative Solarix solar facade, integrated into the new construction section of the building, comprises 521 m² of panels, of which 465 m² are active and 56 m² are dummies. With an expected annual yield of 36,000 kWh and an estimated CO2 reduction of 26,772 kg per year, the facade makes a significant contribution to the sustainability of the headquarters. Solarix closely collaborated with Broekbakema to develop special panels that perfectly match the building’s design. These panels, in a blend of grey tones from the Dot collection, are subtly integrated into the facade, creating a harmonious whole with the concrete and glass elements.

The new dsm-firmenich headquarters is the first national monument in the Netherlands to achieve Paris-proof status, meaning it meets the climate requirements of the Paris Agreement. The building features rooftop solar panels, excellent insulation, efficient HVAC systems, smart lighting, and water-saving measures. This holistic approach minimizes long-term environmental impacts and resulted in the new construction section achieving the highest sustainability certification, BREEAM Outstanding. This certification was partly achieved because the Solarix facade solar panels received a Category 1 classification in the National Environmental Database for this project.
