Currently under construction in Amsterdam North, the new Mama Shelter Hotel is rising on the site of a former metalworks factory. The seven-storey hotel combines contemporary hospitality with ambitious sustainability goals, placing renewable energy generation, biodiversity, and advanced building technologies at the heart of its design.With a gross floor area of approximately 6,300 m², the hotel is being developed by <a href="https://whitehousedevelopment.com/en/">White House Development</a>, constructed by <a href="https://www.jpvaneesteren.nl/">J.P. van Eesteren</a>, and designed by <a href="https://paulderuiter.nl/en">Paul de Ruiter Architects</a>. Renewable energy generation is fully integrated into the building envelope. A total of 632 m² of black matte Solarix solar façade panels have been installed on the hotel tower. These building-integrated photovoltaic panels contribute to the project&#039;s energy-positive ambitions while also providing the building with a distinctive architectural appearance.By integrating solar panels into the facades, valuable roof space remains available for a biodiverse green roof. This green roof supports rainwater retention, improves the building’s thermal performance, and enhances local biodiversity.Designed as a future-proof hospitality destination, the project combines building-integrated photovoltaics with aquifer thermal energy storage and energy recovery systems. In Amsterdam Noord, the new Mama Shelter hotel is getting a sustainable and striking façade. With 632 m² of black Solarix solar façade panels, architecture and renewable energy generation are seamlessly combined.

Redevelopment

Sustainability, climate adaptation and energy saving are important spearheads for the redevelopment of the former data center in De Kwekerij. Less waste and a rapid transformation through maximum reuse of the existing concrete, elevator, stair constructions and steel facade panels. The new materials used in the facade are mainly black aesthetic solar panels. In this way, a sustainable second skin is placed around the building, giving the building a sturdy, robust appearance and also acting as an energy plant.

Estimated annual CO2 reduction of the Baobab solar facade

The facade design was developed in collaboration with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.morstudio.nl/">MOR Studio</a> in one of our standard sizes. Dummy panels have been used for the different panel sizes. A black panel was chosen that is somewhere between matte and glossy, with the dummy panels having the same appearance. The facade is mounted on the existing steelwork, which has been expanded in some places to allow the horizontal beams to be attached. With this building, we show that we can also create beautiful facade solution with black facade solar panels.

Solarix solar facade

Solarix was asked by pv installer <a target="_blank" href="https://wattco.nl/">Wattco</a> and contractor <a target="_blank" href="https://vm-d.nl/">van Mierlo Dinkq</a> to think about the solar facade during the engineering. In collaboration with MOR Studio, a layout of the facade was designed based on our standard size of 600 x 1200 mm. MOR then made a choice from the various options and finishes for the panels. This was a great step towards an affordable, aesthetic and energy-generating facade. Baobab | De Kwekerij

UNStudio has designed One Helix, one of the most sustainable laboratory buildings in the world, located on the Amsterdam University Medical Centre (Amsterdam UMC) campus. This highly ambitious and innovative design integrates cutting-edge sustainability features while maintaining an elegant and intelligent architectural approach.The building, developed in collaboration with Amsterdam UMC, De Vries en Verburg, UNStudio, SolarNRG, Kenwell, Wijnveen, and Solarix, optimises energy generation on all four sides. Solar panels are seamlessly incorporated on top of the fins and as a façade for the technical space on the roof, ensuring a balanced and efficient energy yield.The 6,515 m² structure combines laboratory and office spaces with supporting functions and amenities. Light grey Solarix panels frame the entire top band of the building, while suede black panels adorn the five wings, providing a distinctive aesthetic visible from the interior on every floor.Designed to become one of the most sustainable laboratory environments in the world Designed as an all-electric, net energy-positive building, One Helix is built to maintain net zero emissions and has achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification. Additionally, the project targets a low embodied carbon footprint, with an MPG score of ≤0.6. The result is a striking architectural landmark where energy generation is seamlessly integrated into the design. The integration of solar energy into the facade of One Helix has been carefully designed for both functionality and aesthetics. The light grey Solarix panels from the Mono collection (M-636 Light Granite) frame the upper band of the building, creating a subtle and harmonious appearance. For the fins, black suede panels (B-900) were specifically chosen to ensure optimal energy generation. By strategically applying colour and material, the solar facade enhances both the energy efficiency and the architectural quality of the design.
