Smart solar panel facade for the Pharos project
The sustainable office building Pharos, designed by Architectenbureau Cube architecten, next to Hoofddorp CS station has recently been completed. With an energy-generating, smart, and aesthetically pleasing solar panel facade by Studio Solarix, Pharos demonstrates that the facade of the future has now been realized! Aiming for further reduction of CO2 emissions.
Pharos, an office building from 2003, was targeted for transformation into the healthiest working community in Europe, emphasizing circularity and energy supply. It's set to embody the circular economy. Cairn Real Estate renovated and redeveloped the existing structure, while interior architect Sheryl Leysner and her team designed the interior spaces. Studio Solarix was involved in the redevelopment as both advisor and designer, collaborating with partners Sorba, Kuijpers, Techdynamics, and Kameleon on the realization of 247m2 of solar panel facades at Pharos. Through this collaboration, we take another significant step towards our ambition to achieve 140km2 of Solar Design panels by 2040, offsetting 7.2 billion CO2 annually.
How did we approach Pharos?
It was clear early on that we wanted to create the facade of the future for Pharos by implementing a smart, sustainable solar panel facade in the new section that generates energy. Additionally, with the Solarix facade, we aimed to make a beautiful architectural statement to significantly enhance the building's appearance.
Our Solar Design facade draws inspiration from the existing facade panels but incorporates solar cells using a special printing technique that adds depth, color, and vibrancy. Working closely with the facade builder and architect, we optimally integrated the Solarix solar panels into the building. We're incredibly proud to have partnered with Cairn to bring this Solar Design facade to fruition.
Special LED facade at Pharos
The LED addition aimed to give the building something extra—to enable it to communicate with its surroundings. The building previously had a harsh appearance that we sought to soften using the LEDs. It's about making the building 'breathe,' welcoming you as you arrive. These LEDs react to incoming trains and movement around the building.
What makes Solarix so smart and beneficial for commercial buildings?
Solar Design facade panels are highly suitable for application in projects starting from a facade surface of 100m2. In the case of commercial buildings, there's often more facade surface available compared to roof surface. Solar facade panels are, therefore, a more interesting alternative to install than solar panels on the roof.
Moreover, it keeps the roof surface available, allowing space for things like rooftop gardens. Solarix Solar Design panels can thus make a significant contribution to companies by both sustainability and enhancing the building's aesthetics. The panels also contribute to meeting BENG requirements in terms of sustainability.
